Croatia has marked the Day of Remembrance for Fallen Firefighters, a solemn anniversary dedicated to those who laid down their lives in defence of others. This day, established following a proposal accepted by the Government of the Republic of Croatia in 2024, was observed with deep respect for the fallen. The central event, attended by representatives of local self-government, fire service personnel and the families of the deceased, was a moment for the community to collectively remember those who had given their lives in service.
Special attention is given to the tragic events on the island of Kornat, where seven firefighters lost their lives on 30 August 2007. This event, highlighting the deep bond between firefighters and the local community, remains a lasting memory of the sacrifices made for the protection of the community. Given that firefighters from Šibenik, Vodice and Tisno were involved in that incident, their contribution and sacrifice remain permanently present in the community's memory.
The observance of the Day of Remembrance, organised by the Croatian Firefighters' Association, includes solemn ceremonies as well as more intimate forms of remembrance. Firefighters may, outside of official commemorations, honour fallen colleagues by reading out their names and lighting candles. These symbols, such as the lighting of candles, have become part of a tradition that links generations and reminds us of the sacrifices made for the protection of the community.
These events, though simple, carry deep significance. They remind us of the lives lost in the protection of others, and of the strength of a community gathered in remembrance of those who have given their lives for the protection of others.
