The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ), in collaboration with the Meteoalarm system, has issued a series of warnings regarding an expected heatwave affecting several parts of Croatia. The warnings are categorised by severity, with the highest level, indicated by the colour red, applying to the Dubrov region, while orange warnings have been issued for the other regions. These warnings are active solely on 11 August.
The strictest measures are in place in the Dubrov region, where a red warning for heat is in effect. This warning comes into force at midnight, specifically at 00:01, and lasts until the end of the day, at 23:59. The red colour indicates the highest level of danger, signifying extreme temperatures that pose a serious health risk to the population, particularly to vulnerable groups.
In the Karlovac region, an orange warning for heat is in effect. Unlike in the Dubrov region, this warning applies within a narrow time frame, from 09:00 to 21:00. The orange colour signals a high level of danger, but the time frame is limited to the part of the day when temperatures are highest, requiring increased caution during morning and afternoon hours.
A similar level of risk, an orange warning, applies to the Gospić region. However, the time frame here is wider, covering the whole day. The warning is active from 00:01 to 23:59, meaning that residents of this area will be exposed to high temperatures for 24 hours straight. Although the level of risk is the same as in Karlovac, the continuous exposure throughout the night may be an additional risk factor.
For the Osijek region, the DHMO has issued a yellow warning for heat. The duration of the warning in this part of the country coincides with that in the Karlovac region, lasting from 09:00 to 21:00. The yellow colour indicates a moderate risk, but it still requires adherence to basic measures against overheating during the hottest part of the day.
