The Public Prosecutor's Office in Split has brought charges against eight individuals following a violent disruption of a Prosveta event. The Split Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Friday that the indictment was filed following an investigation into the incident on 3 November 2025.
The eight are accused of violent conduct and violating the right to assemble and protest. According to media reports, one of the accused is Jakov Ćaleta, the head of the HDZ in one of Split's urban districts. The media also report that 39-year-old Ćaleta was among those suspected, having been arrested following the incident. In early October, he was elected chairman of the HDZ branch in the Blatine district.
Police previously reported that a group of men, wearing masks, had violently disrupted the event, where members of the folk ensemble from Novi Sad were performing. Following an investigation, the police filed criminal charges, and the Split Public Prosecutor's Office subsequently brought charges against the eight individuals.
The incident took place on 3 November 2025 in the premises of the Blatine urban district. A group of approximately 50 protesters, including men dressed in black, disrupted the opening of the Serbian Culture Day. At the time, approximately 30 members of Prosveta were present in the hall, along with guests from the 'Veliko Kolo' folk ensemble from Novi Sad.
The actions were strongly condemned by the government, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, President Zoran Milanović, the president of the SDSS, and others.
