USKOK arrested two people in Split on Wednesday on suspicion of corrupt criminal offences. The arrests and urgent evidentiary measures were carried out by the special police unit PNUSKOK under the order of the office, Hina reported.
"These measures are being carried out in the Split area in relation to two people for whom there are reasonable grounds to suspect they committed corrupt criminal offences," USKOK stated in a press release, without revealing details. After questioning the suspects, the office will decide whether to initiate an investigation and request pre-trial detention. They have promised to inform the public promptly about further proceedings.
According to unofficial information relayed by Hina, one of those arrested is a police officer. Investigators traced him through an analysis of encrypted communications on the SKY ECC app. He is accused of checking vehicle registrations several years ago and then passing on data about the vehicles to members of Marko Benzon’s drug gang.
Benzon and Hrvoje Kelić, known as Medo, are charged with organising a criminal group. According to the indictment, the group smuggled and resold large quantities of drugs in Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2020 to 2021. The indictment, filed in April this year, accuses the group of gaining nearly 1.8 million euros in illegal financial benefit through drug resale.
