Irena Komadina, now 22, arrived in Gospić from Pag at a time when the town was engulfed in armed conflict. Upon coming to this place, which would later become her second home, she brought with her her two-year-old daughter, whom she carried in her arms. That moment marked the beginning of her involvement in the harsh wartime conditions of Lika.
As a member of the military medical unit of the Armoured Company of the 9th Guards Brigade, Komadina remained on the frontline alongside her unit throughout the conflict. Her duties were not limited to providing medical aid to the wounded; she performed all tasks necessary on the battlefield to ensure support for soldiers during the most critical moments.
It was on the frontline that she witnessed Operation Storm, the military-police operation that marked a turning point in the war. During those intense days, there was a specific image that became deeply etched in the memory of Gospić’s residents and symbolises her role and sacrifice during that period.
Her experience testifies to exceptional dedication and courage, as she provided life-saving assistance in the most dangerous parts of the frontline while caring for children and family responsibilities. The story of Irena Komadina remains remembered as one of many examples of civil-military cooperation and human endurance during the defence of Croatia.
