The Kvarner region was hit by a magnitude 3.5 earthquake at 10:47, EMSC reported. According to the service, the epicentre was at a depth of 9km.
The earthquake occurred 43km south-east of Rijeka and 19km east of Crikvenica. Residents in the wider area felt the tremor, with the shaking also felt on the island of Krk, in Senj, Otočac and near Brinje.
Witnesses described to EMSC what they experienced. One witness from the area of Novi Vinodolski said: 'It shook well'. Another witness added: 'A short rumble, then a blow like thunder'.
A description came from Crikvenica: 'Crikvenica, it shook hard'. The reports indicate that the shaking was short but noticeable in the area covered by the earthquake.
There are currently no reports of material damage. The 3.5 magnitude earthquake is classified as minor, but such events often cause concern among residents, especially in areas where the shaking is clearly felt.
EMSC provided the location of the epicentre, which helps in understanding the spread of the shaking. In addition to Rijeka and Crikvenica, the earthquake was felt on the island of Krk and in Senj, Otočac and near Brinje.
