County Prefect Anđelko Stričak has declared a state of natural disaster due to drought for the municipalities of Donja Voća, Martijanec, Sveti Đurđ and Jalžabet, as well as the town of Ludbreg, on 13 October. This is the third natural disaster due to drought declared in the past month, with the decision made following a proposal from the heads of the four municipalities and one town.
The drought period from June to August this year caused significant material damage to agriculture in the area of these municipalities and the town of Ludbreg. The prolonged lack of rainfall, coupled with high temperatures, adversely affected agricultural production, resulting in poorer plant development, damage, reduced yields, and an expected significant reduction in this year's harvest.
In accordance with the Act on Mitigation and Removal of the Consequences of Natural Disasters, affected parties must report damage in writing and on the prescribed form to the town or municipal commission within eight days of the declaration of the natural disaster. Within 15 days, the town or municipal commission must produce initial damage estimates, while within 50 days, the same commission must submit the final estimated damage to the County Commission. The County Commission will then submit the reported final damage estimates to the State Commission and relevant ministries within the statutory period.
The declaration of a drought-related disaster has meanwhile been announced in other parts of the country. On Friday, 09 October 2026, the Prefect of Sisak-Moslavina County issued a decision declaring a natural disaster – drought – in the towns of Glina, Kutina, Novska, Petrinja and Popovača, and the municipalities of Dvor, Jasenovac, Lekenik, Lipovljani, Martinska Ves, Topusko and Velika Ludina.
This natural disaster was declared due to significant damage to agricultural crops and perennial plantations caused by high temperatures and a lack of rainfall for the period from 01 May to 29 September 2026. Town and municipal commissions for assessing damage from natural disasters are being activated to receive damage reports, with the initial damage estimate to be entered into the Damage Register within the statutory period, followed by the final damage estimate submitted to the County Commission via the Register. It is expected that a natural disaster due to drought will subsequently be declared in other towns and municipalities in Sisak-Moslavina County.
The Municipality of Lekenik is calling affected family farms in its area to report damage to the Municipal Commission for Assessing Damage from Natural Disasters, using the prescribed form available on the Municipality of Lekenik website, within eight days of the decision being adopted.
