During the current year of 2026, a total of 54 fires in open areas have been recorded within the jurisdiction of the Požega-Slavonia Police Department. Statistics show a significant increase in such incidents during the summer months, with five cases recorded in June alone, while July was marked by 16 new fires. The latest incident was recorded on Monday, 3 August 2026, at around 10.30 in Kutjevo, specifically in Vinkomir Street.
In the aforementioned case, a 68-year-old woman was burning dry grass and leaves in her yard, which led to the outbreak of a fire. Given that burning fire in open areas is strictly prohibited during the ban period, and especially the burning of plant waste, weeds, branches, and other combustible material, a report of the committed misdemeanor will be filed against her. The report will be sent to the competent Civil Protection Service in accordance with the provisions of the Fire Protection Act.
To prevent further accidents, the Požega-Slavonia County (Požeško-slavonska županija) adopted a Decision introducing a ban on open fires. This measure is valid from 1 June to 30 September 2026. During this period, citizens are prohibited from lighting fires in nature, and penalties for offenders can be significant.
Experts warn that high temperatures, drought, and wind significantly increase the risk of uncontrolled fire spread. These meteorological conditions are precisely the main reason for introducing such strict measures, with the aim of protecting forests, agricultural land, and citizens' property from potential catastrophic consequences.
