In the village of Hum Stubički, a fire broke out in dry grass and vegetation, which escalated into property damage due to the negligence of a local resident. The incident occurred on Wednesday around 11:30, when a 44-year-old man was clearing land by burning weeds and dry vegetation on a neglected plot.
Due to strong winds, the flames spread rapidly from the plot to the surrounding dry hay. The fire then engulfed a nearby outbuilding, which was completely destroyed. According to the Krapina-Zagor County Police, the fire was reported as a criminal offence or a misdemeanor, depending on the further course of the investigation.
Personnel from the Zagorje Public Fire Brigade in Zabok and firefighters from the Gornja Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. Together, they managed to extinguish the fire and prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent buildings and forest areas.
This was not the only fire in the region in recent times; in total, three fires in dry grass and vegetation broke out in Zagorje. Fire services have warned the public about the dangers of setting grass on fire, particularly in dry and windy conditions, and reminded citizens of the strict penalties for causing such fires.
