The 26th edition of the traditional potato festival was held in Belica, an event that brought together 19 teams. Participants competed in cooking traditional dishes, and the entire event was imbued with the spirit of celebrating the symbol of the region, known as Međimurje potato. This traditional gathering brought together numerous associations, farmers, and locals, highlighting the importance of preserving local traditions and local produce.
Behind this cultural and gastronomic celebration, however, lie serious challenges faced by growers. Experts warn of increasing difficulties in cultivation, primarily due to climate change. Frequent dry periods without rainfall pose a particular threat, directly endangering crop yields and quality. For this reason, the application of modern techniques and irrigation systems is key to ensuring production stability despite unpredictable weather conditions.
As part of the soil fertility control project, 175 samples are taken annually. The aim of these measures is to preserve high soil quality, which is crucial for protecting the brand of Međimurje potato. Additionally, an irrigation project covering 337 hectares is underway. A second phase of the project is planned, which will cover an additional 400 hectares of irrigated land, aiming to further secure conditions for more successful cultivation despite the challenges posed by climate change.
