Olive groves on the islands of Brač and Hvar are being hit by severe drought, creating serious problems in production. These agricultural holdings are located in areas without irrigation systems, making them extremely vulnerable to current weather conditions.
The key factor contributing to this situation is the lack of rainfall. The last rain fell in early July, and since then there have been no significant rains to replenish the moisture in the soil. In combination with high temperatures, which are characteristic of the current period, extreme conditions have been created for the survival of the plants.
The consequences are already visible on the plants themselves. The fruit on the olive trees has dried out, directly affecting the quality and quantity of the future harvest. These conditions pose a serious challenge to local producers, whose income and survival are threatened by unfavourable weather conditions and a lack of irrigation infrastructure.
