The towing of the ship Galeb to the shipyard in Martinšć has begun, thus starting the repair of the bow damage caused by the Turkish ship Deniz Akay. According to current projections, the one-month stay in dry dock will cost approximately 860,000 euros.
The City of Rijeka has revealed how much of this money should be covered by the insurance company of the Turkish ship Deniz Akay. The amount allocated for the repair, according to the offer from the shipyard Viktor Lenac, is 386,866 euros including VAT. The repair costs fall entirely on the insurance of the party responsible for the accident, not from the city budget.
The Galeb was towed to the Mol long from the Krk shipyard more than a month and a half ago, where it spent a little over five years on renovation and conversion work. The ship arrived in the port without the final segments being completed. The ship does not have a class or other ship certificates proving the technical correctness and safety of this floating object, so it cannot be opened to visitors without the documents of the Croatian Register of Ships (HRS).
The first tender for the repair of the bow damage was cancelled. In the City of Rijeka, it was realised that the opportunity to 'quietly' repair the bow was available. During the drydocking, thousands of points will be checked, including the thickness of the ship's hull, the potential replacement of worn-out plates, and the renewal of the anti-corrosion protection and complete painting of the ship.
This part will be paid for from the city budget, and it is projected that it will cost approximately 470,600 euros. The total cost of the one-month stay in dry dock will thus reach 860,000 euros, of which part is covered by the insurance of the Turkish ship, and part from the city treasury.
