Bruno Šimleša, a Croatian writer, sociologist and television presenter, presented his new travelogue, In the Heart of the Wild, at the Virovitica City Library and Reading Room on Friday, 14 August 2026. The event drew literature and adventure enthusiasts keen to hear the details of the feat described in his work.
The book In the Heart of the Wild centres on the author’s personal journey walking the well-known Pacific Crest Trail. This is one of the longest and most famous hiking routes in North America, requiring exceptional physical and mental endurance from those who choose to traverse the entire route.
According to information from the book, Šimleša began his journey at the southern border in Mexico and finished at the northern border in Canada. This transcontinental trek was not merely a sporting feat, but a profound personal journey through diverse geographical and cultural landscapes.
The total distance covered by the author is 4,482 kilometres. Such a distance requires months of intensive preparation, logistics and walking through varying weather conditions and terrain. The book offers insight into the challenges encountered during this long undertaking.
The event in Virovitica allowed the public to learn more about the motivations that drove Šimleša to undertake such a feat, as well as the experiences gained while walking through the wilderness. The presentation took place on Friday evening, with the library serving as the meeting place for the author and readers.
