Aaqib Nabi, the 29-year-old all-rounder, has been named in the Indian Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka. He becomes the first cricketer from the Jammu and Kashmir region to receive a call-up to the highest level of international cricket. Nabi will replace Jasprit Bumrah in the team preparing for the series which begins on 15 August.

Throughout his life, he has faced challenges such as harsh winters, protracted conflicts, and extremely limited sports infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, Nabi built his career playing on local grounds with minimal opportunities for advancement.
His family background further underscores the weight of this achievement. His father, Ghulam Nabi Dar, was a schoolteacher and initially did not support his son’s sporting ambitions. Dar believed that playing cricket was a waste of time, as he saw no realistic prospect in the discipline. Instead, he wanted Aaqib to focus on academic education and become a doctor.
The change in his father’s attitude occurred only after he witnessed his son’s exceptional passion for cricket. This shift from academic expectations to sporting dedication enabled Nabi to overcome the infrastructure deficits in his region. Now, as a member of the national team, he is opening doors for future generations of cricketers from an area that has long been marginalised in terms of sporting opportunities.
