Vladimir Bregović has been elected to the Executive Committee of the United World Wrestling (UWW), marking a historic achievement for Croatian sport. The election was confirmed at the UWW Congress held in Astana, Kazakhstan, at the end of October 2026.
Bregović received 104 votes out of a total of 141, securing him a place in the highest governing body of the world wrestling organisation. This confirms his long-standing involvement in wrestling, both at national and international levels.
He is a Croatian local politician and long-time sports official who currently heads the Croatian Wrestling Federation. In addition to this role, he leads the Community of Sports Associations and Federations of Zagreb County, where he continues to work on developing sport in the region.
Vladimir Bregović was born on 28 November 1963 in Zagreb. He is a civil engineer by profession, having graduated from the first cycle of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. He is also a participant in the Homeland War and is professionally employed at Croatian Waters.
His sports career began in childhood, when he was a champion of the former state in wrestling. He later devoted himself to sports management and politics. He served as Mayor of the City of Vrbovec for three terms, from 2005 to 2017, and also held the positions of Chairman of the Board of the Gradip Vrbovec company and PIK Vrbovec.
His election to the UWW Executive Committee further confirms his standing in international wrestling circles. With this success, Croatian sport has gained a stronger voice in global wrestling governance, and Bregović will transfer his experience from local administration and business to the world sports stage.
