The International team entered the final day of the Presidents Cup in Medinah with a 10-7.5 lead over the United States, maintaining a three-point advantage despite a strong late charge from the hosts on the third day of the competition.
The hosts were stronger in the morning session, winning two and splitting one of the four fourball matches. The Internationals were behind in every individual match during the day, but managed to recover and hold their lead.
The afternoon fourball matches ended in a draw. Captain Geoff Ogilvy highlighted the quality of the opposition: "The same thing happened this afternoon. The US team played so well all day. They played some really great fourball matches, especially this afternoon."
Reflecting on the morning session, Ogilvy said: "We were behind in every match, but to come back and pull out one and a half points from that morning – we felt it was a small victory because we were behind everywhere." He added, "For the boys to come back and pull out two points from that, it was amazing."
The key moment occurred when Canadian Corey Conners saved par on the 18th hole, thereby securing the lead for the Internationals with a three-point lead.
The Internationals have won the Presidents Cup only once since the competition began in 1994, and have never won on American soil. On Sunday, 12 singles matches will be played, with each team needing 15.5 points to win.
