A historic moment in world medicine was recorded in London, when surgeons successfully carried out the first brain operation guided by artificial intelligence in its key phases. The operation was carried out at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, an institution known for its long-standing work and specialisation, which was founded in 1859. This step represents a significant advance in the integration of advanced technology into surgical procedures.
The operation was carried out in May, and the procedure was performed on a 48-year-old patient, Rhys Hibbert. Before the intervention, the patient’s condition was serious, with worsening symptoms including severe hormonal imbalances and vision problems. Doctors warned that the patient, had he not undergone surgery, would have lost his sight, which further highlighted the urgency and importance of the intervention. The tumour on the pituitary gland, measuring 11 millimetres, was the key challenge in this procedure.
The key aspect of the success of this operation was the use of an advanced artificial intelligence system. During the operation, the AI system analysed live footage from the operating theatre, allowing surgeons to precisely identify key structures, such as nerves and blood vessels, which needed to be avoided to prevent serious complications. This technology enabled a more precise and safe removal of the tumour, reducing the risk of damage to sensitive brain structures.
The results of the operation were highly positive. Just a week after the operation, the patient was able to walk unaided without the use of aids, such as a walking stick. It is particularly notable that the patient was able to see clearly everything in the room, indicating that visual functions had been successfully preserved. These results confirm the effectiveness of integrating artificial intelligence into surgical procedures, offering hope for improved outcomes in similar procedures in the future.
This innovative application, which has enabled more precise and safer surgical procedures, opens up new chapters in the treatment of complex conditions. Work on such projects, supported by institutions such as the National Institute for Health and Care Research, is key to advancing medicine and improving the quality of life of patients worldwide.
