The annual departure of 185 was marked in Varaždin and Čakovec in 1991. This event reminded the public of the contribution of police, including those from the Varaždin and other police stations, in the defence of the city on the Danube.
Of the total number of 185, 21 lost their lives in the fight, while seven died as a result of injuries sustained during the battles. Special attention was paid to the seven wounded police who died as a result of injuries sustained in the fight. In addition, 11 died later, following the war injuries and torture they suffered in captivity.
Of the total number of 185, 111 were taken to Serbian camps, where they were exposed to various forms of abuse. Some of the prisoners were held for 269 days, which speaks of the extreme severity of the conditions in which they were placed. Despite all the obstacles, these people remained a symbol of endurance and sacrifice for freedom.
The anniversary was held in both cities, with local officials present, including the county prefect of Međimurje Matija Posavec, the mayor of the city of Varaždin and the mayor of the city of Čakovec.
This event is not just a celebration of the past, but a reminder of the importance of preserving the memory of all those who contributed to the defence of the homeland.
