The Croatian Institute for Transfusion Medicine has warned of depleted blood supplies, particularly in the O positive and O negative groups, and has called on the public to donate.
The situation has been further complicated by the seasonal drop in donations during the summer months, necessitating coordinated action across the country to ensure an adequate supply of blood for emergency medical needs.
In Bjelovar, the local Red Cross is organising a blood donation drive that will run until Friday. Members of the public are invited to the local Red Cross headquarters, where the drive will take place daily from 11:00 to 17:00. The appeal is directed at all healthy individuals who meet the eligibility criteria, in a bid to stabilise local supplies.
A similar drive is planned for Friday, 7 August 2026, in the region of Valpovo and Belišće. The event is being organised by the local Red Cross in collaboration with the Clinical Institute of Transfusion Medicine at the University Clinical Hospital in Osijek. Donors are invited to the premises of the Beliš volunteer fire brigade, located at 11 Željezna Street, where the procedure will take place from 10:00 to 15:00.
The Croatian Red Cross is also organising an emergency drive in collaboration with the local Donja Stubica branch, supported by the Zag institute for transfusion medicine. The drive will take place on Friday at the fire station in Donja Stubica. These coordinated measures are crucial for replenishing supplies in the face of increased medical demand during the summer.
