The Virovitica branch of the Red Cross organised a voluntary blood donation drive on Saturday, 8 August. The event was held at the organisation’s premises, with the Transfusion Medicine Department of the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek playing a key role in its implementation. The aim of the joint effort was to ensure adequate supplies of a specific and medically critical blood group.
As part of the drive, a total of 56 donations of blood were collected. All donated quantities belonged to blood group 0-. This specific blood group is often of particular interest to healthcare institutions due to its wide applicability in emergency medical interventions and transfusion procedures.
According to the organisers’ estimates, the collected blood has the potential to contribute to saving the lives of more than 150 people. Although the figures refer to the potential number of patients who could be helped, the actual medical impact depends on further procedures for separating and distributing blood within the hospital system.
Among the donors who participated in the drive was Mateja Cindrić. She donated blood for the first time in her life. Her participation highlights the importance of involving new people in the system of regular donation, which is crucial for the long-term stability of blood supplies in healthcare institutions across the region.
