County Deputy President Joško Cebalo received voluntary blood donors and representatives of Red Cross societies from the Dubrovnik-Neretva County area today at the Ranjina Palace. He was accompanied by heads of departments Žaklina Marević and Đurđica Popović.
Cebalo thanked everyone who selflessly gives a part of themselves to save human lives, stating that donating blood is one of the most beautiful and selfless acts. He also congratulated them on Voluntary Blood Donors' Day, albeit with a slight delay and with great gratitude.
Among those present at the reception was Mato Nižić from Ploče, who has donated blood 75 times, and Krešimir Marković from Dubrovnik, with 50 donations. Bernard Curić from Opuzen and Gordana Mustapić from Orebić, who has donated blood nine times, were also in attendance.
The reception was attended by the new director of the Red Cross Society of Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Maja Barbir, as well as president Antun Franković and head of the transfusion department at Dubrovnik General Hospital, Dolores Martinović. Representatives of Red Cross societies from Metković, Dubrovnik, Korčula and Ploče were also present.
Any healthy person aged 18 to 65 can donate blood, and in cases of good health, blood can be donated up to the age of 70. Men can donate blood four times a year with a three-month interval between donations, while women can donate three times a year with a four-month interval.
One donated unit of blood can save up to three lives, and every two seconds someone in the world needs blood.
