Croatian police announced that a person was stopped at the Klek border crossing on 20 August at around 13:50. The individual in question was a police officer who, at the time of the check, had 2.01 per mille of alcohol in his blood, which is more than three and a half times the permitted limit of zero per mille.
Although the individual was a member of the law enforcement service, no exceptions were made in this case. The police intervened immediately, and the driver was immediately removed from traffic. The officer in question was held in police premises until he had completely sobered up, ensuring that he did not endanger traffic safety or other road users.
Under the misdemeanour law, such offences attract stricter sanctions. The police officer in question was fined a monetary penalty of 1,320 euros. In addition to the fine, the court also imposed a strict ban, specifically a ban on driving motor vehicles of category B for a period of three months.
This incident has once again raised the issue of responsibility for all road users, regardless of whether they belong to law enforcement forces or not. The police emphasise that road traffic safety laws apply equally to everyone, regardless of social status or professional affiliation. The case of this police officer serves as a reminder of the strict prohibition on driving under the influence of alcohol, whether one is a professional driver, a police officer, or an ordinary citizen.
