At the border crossings in southern Croatia, endless queues of cars have been recorded. The standstill occurred following intense transit traffic heading towards Montenegro, which has made passage through the state border difficult for travellers.
Along the main roads, local residents have organised spontaneous aid for those waiting in the heat. Members of the Vitaljina Association have been distributing bottles of water to passengers, while the local mayor, Božo Lasić, has publicly praised their effort and solidarity in difficult conditions.
Some locals have also joined in the aid by placing water-filled barrels on the access roads. The Čupić family set up such a water source in Gruda, outside the Tommy establishment, while a similar initiative was carried out by Mr Ćeb in Karasovići. The local newspaper, Dubrovački vjesnik, reported on the specific aid provided by the Čupić family.
To facilitate hygiene in the queues, some individuals have distributed additional bottles of water, while other local residents have placed waste bins on the main road. This measure has allowed passengers to dispose of waste, such as used nappies, in the bins, thereby keeping the roadside clean.
Roman Zglav expressed satisfaction with the aid measures, noting that the local initiatives have provided significant support to the stranded public during the border traffic jam.
