On Tuesday, a restored monument honouring 19 Croatian defenders who died during the Operation Storm was unveiled in the settlement of Zalužnica. The monument is located on a strategic route towards Vrhovine, giving it additional historical and symbolic weight in the context of the Homeland War.
The initiative for the restoration of this monument was launched by the Senj Association of Volunteers, recognising the need to maintain the memory of those who gave their lives for Croatian independence. Thanks to this initiative, a wide network of local communities ready to contribute to the preservation of the heritage was brought together.
Numerous local authorities were involved in the restoration project, including the towns of Senj, Novi Vinodolski, and Crikvenica. Their financial and organisational support was key to the realisation of the work on the monument, which has thus become an example of successful regional cooperation.
In addition to the towns, two municipalities also joined in: the Municipality of Vinodol and the Municipality of Brinje. Their participation further confirmed the broader support of the community in the Lika region and the Adriatic coast for the preservation of the memory of the 1995 events.
The Li-Sen County also recognised the importance of the project and joined in the restoration of the monument. Its participation highlights the regional significance of the monument and the need for its maintenance at the county level.
The unveiling of the restored monument in Zalužnica represents an important moment for the local community and all those who wish to preserve the memory of Croatian defenders. The project has shown how joint work can contribute to preserving historical truth and respect for the fallen.
