The Association of Associations and Members of the Croatian Veterans' Association (HVIDR) of the Virovitica-Podravina County, in cooperation with the HVIDR Slatina branch, has for the second time organised the 'Josip Meršić' Memorial. The event took place on the football pitch in Donji Meljani, under the patronage of the Požega-Slavonia County and with the co-sponsorship of the Ministry of Croatian Veterans and the Town of Slatina.
Josip Meršić was a volunteer in the Homeland War from November 1990, a participant in the 'Kocka', 'Bljesak' and 'Storm' military operations, and a recipient of the Homeland War Memorial Medal. He spent his entire working life in the police force.
The president of the Association of Associations and Members of the HVIDR, Nenad Križić, highlighted that the memorial is intended 'to rescue from oblivion those who have made an immeasurable contribution to defence'.
Krunoslav Bot, a police officer at the Slabin Police Station and a former colleague of Meršić, recalled the deceased police officer as 'a man who shared the hardest and the most beautiful moments with his colleagues'.
The memorial was also supported by the Slabin Police Station and the local community of Donji Meljani.
