The Association of Veterans and Members of the HVU of the Virovitica-Podravina County, in cooperation with the HVU Slatina branch, held the second 'Josip Meršić' Memorial, dedicated to the late Croatian police officer and volunteer. The event took place on the football pitch in Donji Meljan, under the patronage of the Virovitica-Podravina County, the Ministry of Veterans, and the Municipality of Slatina.
Josip Meršić was a volunteer in the Homeland War from November 1990, a participant in the 'Kocka', 'Bljesak' and 'Oluja' military operations, and a recipient of the Homeland War Memorial. He spent his entire working life in the police force.
The president of the HVU of the VPŽ, Nenad Križić, stated that the memorial should 'rescue from oblivion those who have made an immeasurable contribution to defence'.
Krunoslav Bot, a police officer at the Slatina Police Station and a former colleague of Meršić, recalled the late police officer as 'a man who shared with his colleagues the hardest and the best moments'.
The Memorial was also supported by the Slatina Police Station and the local community of Donji Meljani.
