On the sports grounds at Barica in Benkovac, numerous Croatian defenders, comrades, members of defenders' associations, and people of good will gathered on Sunday, 20 September, for the 2nd Memorial Tournament dedicated to the Croatian knight Genta Međugor. The tournament was held under the motto 'The condors spread their wings, beautiful Croatia, so that ours may be', and was organised by UDP Pionirski grad 1990 Zagreb.
Genta Međugor is listed as a missing Croatian defender as of 28 September 1991. He was a member of the Croatian police and the 'Pionirski grad' special unit from Zagreb's Dubrava. His comrades remember him as a member of a unit that, during the Homeland War, passed through numerous battlefields – from Pakrac and Daruvar, through the blockade of the 'Maršalka' barracks in Zagreb, to the Bloody Easter at Plitvice. After the fall of the barracks in Varaždin, Genta Međugor set off as the advance guard of an arms convoy towards the Dalmatian front. On the way to Zadar, the convoy turned off the correct path and fell into crossfire at the Green Oak. Since then, he has been lost, and official searches have not yielded an answer to the question of what happened to the Croatian defender, who remains on the list of missing persons.
Before the start of the tournament, the comrades of Genta Međugor and representatives of various associations gathered at the memorial at the Green Oak. They laid wreaths and lit candles in memory of Genta Međugor, but also of all Croatian defenders who gave their lives in the foundation of free Croatia.
The tournament was opened by General Ivan Zelić, envoy of the Minister of Veterans Tomo Medved, who welcomed the gathered Croatian defenders and thanked the organisers for their effort and organisation. The event was addressed by the president of UDP Pionirski grad 1990 Zagreb, Zvonimir Dumančić.
Competitors took to the fields in four disciplines – bowls, cards, ping-pong, and tug of war. At the end of the competition, cups, medals, certificates, and thanks were awarded to the best teams. In the tug of war, the first place was taken by the Zagreb Condors. In bowls, the best were Nikola Grahovec and Ivica Čirjak, while in table tennis, the first place went to the 4th Brigade. In ping-pong, the winner was Marijan Boban, and in bowls, the Association of the Young of Raštević.
The gathering continued with the well-known group Sinovi Hercegovine, whose patriotic and entertaining musical programme entertained the gathered crowd until the early hours. The organisers had provided a free barbecue, stew, and drink for all Croatian defenders and people of good will. The 2nd Memorial Tournament in honour of Genta Međugor took place in Benkovac in the sign of sport, patriotic unity, friendship, and remembrance.
