A delegation from the City of Velika Gorica laid wreaths and lit candles at the Memorial to Fallen Croatian Defenders of the Homeland War on the plateau in front of the Velika Gorica City Cemetery. The same tribute was paid at the central cross within the cemetery, with the city honouring all who laid down their lives in the Homeland War.
Wreaths were laid by Mayor Krešimir Ačkar, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Neven Karas and the President of the City Council, Darko Bekić. In doing so, the highest city leadership led the commemoration of the fallen Croatian defenders.
Alongside the city delegation, wreaths were also laid by delegations from the police, the army and the fire service, veterans' associations, the parents and children of fallen Croatian defenders, and political parties. The joint laying of wreaths expressed honour and piety towards all who gave their lives for freedom.
Candles were also lit under the bust of the first Croatian President, Dr Franjo Tuđman, in the central city park that bears his name. This meant the commemoration extended to the city centre, alongside the memorials at the cemetery.
Many residents of Velika Gorica also visited the resting places of their loved ones this year, lighting candles and laying flowers. In this way, citizens joined the collective remembrance of the fallen defenders and their own deceased.
