A serious traffic accident occurred on Saturday at approximately 09:30 on the A1 motorway, near the Maslenica Bridge, close to the Rovanjska exit in the southbound direction. A car carrying six members of a Slovenian family crashed into a ravine approximately 15 metres deep.

The family’s grandfather died in the accident. The remaining five passengers were taken to Zadar General Hospital, where they were treated after examination.

The driver, the family’s father, and two minor children were not kept in hospital for treatment after examination. Two children sustained minor physical injuries. Two adult women were also treated at the hospital.

One middle-aged woman sustained serious physical injuries. She will undergo surgical treatment and then be admitted to the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. The other woman, of older age, will be kept under observation due to her injuries.

Excessive speed is the most likely cause of the vehicle leaving the road. It was raining at the time of the accident, and the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle due to speed not adapted to the conditions and road surface.

An on-site inspection was carried out at the scene. The police have not yet released further details.

Due to the accident, traffic between the Sveti Rok and Rovanjska junctions was reduced to one lane, with a speed limit of 60 km/h. Roads are locally wet and slippery today.
