The State Inspectorate is implementing measures to seal apartments on the island of Vir during the tourist season. This restrictive measure has been introduced due to serious concerns that the accommodation in question is being used for illegal rental to guests, which constitutes a violation of current regulations in the tourism sector.
According to information released by Vedrana Filipović Grčić, the deputy state inspector, the imposed ban aims to ensure compliance with the regulations. This measure applies until the identified deficiencies are rectified or the necessary approval for the activity of rental is obtained.
The legal framework stipulates that the sealing measure lasts for a minimum of 30 days. During this period, property owners must take the necessary steps to legalise their accommodation; otherwise, the measure will be extended or further sanctions will follow depending on the severity of the offence.
Viewed more broadly, the tourism inspectorate has intensified its inspections. From the beginning of the pre-season to date, a total of 1,421 inspections have been carried out. In 122 cases, inspectors identified illegal rental, to which a response was made by imposing 68 work bans.
Of the total number of bans imposed, physical sealing of premises was carried out in 38 cases. These measures are implemented across the country, from Istria to Dubrovnik, indicating a systematic approach to addressing the issue of illegal tourism at the national level.
In two instances, it was established that the apartment owners were foreign nationals. The tourism inspectorate proposed to the court the confiscation of assets acquired unlawfully, amounting to approximately 400,000 euros, in an effort to prevent further illegal activity.
The situation on Vir is being monitored by local landlord Elizabeta Fumić. Her testimony is part of the broader picture of measures being implemented at the location, where inspectors face the challenge of ensuring legality in one of the most visited tourist destinations in Croatia.
