Para-athletics authorities have decided to re-run the women's T54 1,500m race, effectively overturning the initial victory of Melanie Woods. The decision was made following a series of protests and incidents during the race. The race will be re-run on Friday, ensuring that the final standings are determined in a new competition rather than based on the initial result.
The original race, held on Wednesday in Glasgow, was marked by a dramatic fall in the first lap. At the time, Ellie Kottas from England had taken silver, with the Canadian athlete Nandini Sharma finishing in second place. However, Sharma was later disqualified due to her involvement in the incident, a decision that was upheld despite protests from Canada. The situation became further complicated as Australia and Mauritius lodged additional protests.
Although the re-run was ordered by the technical officials, it was clarified that this was a decision made by the technical committee rather than the Glasgow 2026 organising committee. The medal ceremony, which was scheduled for Thursday, has been cancelled. No medals were actually awarded to the athletes, including Woods, Ellie Kottas, and Mikaela Dingley from Australia, who had finished third in the original race. All athletes now have the opportunity to compete again for gold, silver, and bronze in the re-run event.
