Como secured a convincing away victory against French side Lens with a score of 9-1 in the fourth round of the Champions League. The team managed by Cesc Fàbregas thereby equalled the negative record held by Zagreb's Dinamo for the most goals conceded in a single Champions League match.
Until this evening's match, Dinamo was the only team in the history of the Champions League to have conceded nine goals in a single encounter. This occurred on 17 September 2024 at the Allianz Arena, when Bayern won 9-2 in the first round of the league phase. Bayern became the first team to score nine goals in a single Champions League match, with Harry Kane scoring four. Michael Olise added two goals, while Raphaël Guerreiro, Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka scored one each. Bruno Petković and Takuya Ogiwara scored for Dinamo, and Bayern won by a seven-goal margin.
In the match against Lens, Como took the lead in the seventh minute with a goal by Anastasios Douvikas. The Italian side had a 3-0 lead at half-time, and the hosts conceded six more goals in the second half. Martin Baturina scored to make it 8-1, while Matteo Papaccioli netted the ninth goal. Lens managed to score only one goal on home soil.
This victory for Como also brought a new record. Como won by an eight-goal margin, thereby equalling the record for the biggest victory in the history of the Champions League. That record was previously held by Liverpool, who beat Beşiktaş 8-0 in 2007, and Real Madrid, who achieved the same result against Malmö in 2015. In addition, Como set a new record for the biggest away victory in the competition.
The match between Bayern and Dinamo remains the second-highest scoring game in the history of the Champions League. A total of 11 goals were scored in Munich, the same number as in Monaco's 8-3 victory over Deportivo in 2003. The absolute record is held by the match between Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warsaw, which ended in an 8-4 victory for the German club in November 2016. Twelve goals were scored in that match.
