FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the expanded 48-team World Cup as a 'resounding success' and confirmed that the tournament will be assessed following the event, with a further expansion to 64 teams considered.
'It was a huge success with 48 teams,' Infantino said, highlighting that every team performed at a high level and that teams from all continents scored goals and secured at least a point.
The strongest argument, he noted, was the performance of the African teams: nine out of ten reached the knockout stage of the tournament, which is taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In the previous World Cup, Africa had only five representatives.
The expansion to 64 teams, Infantino said, will be assessed following the conclusion of the tournament. He stated that the World Cup should be organised 'for the whole world', not just for Europe and South America, and that every nation should have the right to dream of participating.
