New research has revealed why groups often make more accurate decisions than individuals, revealing that the reason lies in a more complex process of analysis rather than a simple consensus of different opinions. Although the idea that the collective outperforms the individual in judgment is considered established, it has primarily been based on the Western jury system and the assumption that discussion with multiple participants automatically leads to a better outcome. It was long believed that the group's answer formed simply as the average of all members' initial positions, but the new study shows that the process is significantly more dynamic.
The research was led by neuroscientist Federico Barrera-Lemarchan from the University of Torcuato Di Tella in Argentina, with results published via the source ScienceAlert. His findings show that groups do not achieve better results through simply combining initial guesses, but rather when they break down the problem together into smaller parts. After jointly analysing these smaller components, participants form a new, final answer that is more precise than individual estimates. Scientists refer to this specific strategy as 'collective Fermi estimation'.
The phenomenon known as 'the wisdom of crowds' has long been observed in various fields, including the prediction of geopolitical events, financial market movements, and the making of medical diagnoses. Despite its wide application, scientists have long sought to understand why this phenomenon works, and why it sometimes fails. Previous studies have not provided a single answer to these questions, and some research suggests that social interaction can worsen estimates, as participants begin to mimic one another rather than thinking independently.
The study involved three experiments which confirmed that the consensus of small groups yields better results than the average of significantly larger groups. These findings overturn the previous assumption of averaging opinions and highlight the importance of structured analysis. The results suggest that the key to success lies in the group's ability to deconstruct complex problems into manageable parts, thereby avoiding the trap of conformity and increasing the overall accuracy of the final decision.
