The German battery manufacturer Varta is in a serious financial crisis, threatening the company with total collapse. In response to this situation, a group of key creditors has initiated a plan to separate the household battery business from the rest of the company. The aim is to transfer this specific segment into a new corporate structure to secure its future.
According to the creditors, the separation of the household battery business represents the most viable way to preserve at least part of the company. This strategy is considered crucial for saving the most valuable segment of the business at a time when the wider Varta group is struggling with severe financial difficulties. The strategic shift is justified by the highly strained financial situation at the company’s headquarters in Ellwangen, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
The restructuring process involves an ad hoc group of creditors, including major financial institutions. Among them is Deutsche Bank, alongside specialist investors such as RBC BlueBay, Blontyre, and Whitebox. This coalition of creditors is acting in unison to halt the further decline of the company and maximise the return on investment through the targeted separation of more profitable segments.
An independent review conducted by the advisory firm FTI revealed critical liquidity issues within the company. According to the findings, Varta urgently needs a double-digit million-euro injection to survive the current phase. The analysis clearly identified a lack of funds necessary for day-to-day operations, indicating that self-financing is not possible without external assistance.
Finally, the report highlights that additional capital is required to sustain the business in the long term. Without this financial injection and the structural changes proposed by the creditors, the company has no realistic chance of surviving in the market. Restructuring is therefore not merely an option, but a necessary condition for the survival of the business segments that have market value.
