The large fire that broke out on Tuesday afternoon in the MEC d.o.o. warehouse, which produces and stores packaging, was extinguished on Wednesday at 04:40. The operation, which lasted almost 12 hours, involved 170 firefighters with 51 vehicles.

The public fire department in Čakovec received the report of the fire at 16:09 on Tuesday. The fire, which engulfed large quantities of plastic, paint, and solvents, was tackled by professional firefighters from Čakovec as well as 27 volunteer fire brigades from the Međimurje County.

Several workers from the company were examined due to smoke inhalation, as were three firefighters. The fire was contained during the night, and following the extinguishing, the site was cleaned up.

"It was an extremely difficult operation in which a large quantity of paint, solvents, and plastic was burning. Thanks to the quick response of both volunteer and professional firefighters, and the sound decisions made by the incident commander, the fire was brought under control and major material damage was prevented," said the Chief Fire Officer, Slavko Tucaković, praising all those involved in the intervention.

According to the eMeđimurje portal, the damage is estimated in the millions, with heavy damage visible at the site the day after the fire.
