The foreign minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, has once again firmly rejected the possibility of establishing a new electoral unit from which the member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Croatian people would be elected. He stated that there is currently no room for such changes, emphasising that there are no new electoral units and that the concept of a third entity is also out of reach in the current political context.
Konaković expressed concern over the intensification of unrealistic narratives about political projects, which, in his view, lack genuine public support, particularly in the pre-election atmosphere. He believes that it is Bosnian political actors who are suffering as a result of such political manipulations, highlighting that it is important to distinguish between genuine needs and political speculation.
His stance was particularly sharp towards the resolution by the Croatian Sabor in July, which strengthens the political position of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Konaković described this decision as a gross interference in the internal affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stating that the resolution directly intrudes upon the sovereignty of the state. Despite this criticism, he acknowledged that Croatia has the right to be concerned about the status and rights of its compatriots abroad, which is a key element in bilateral relations.
At the same time, he stressed that the question of the election of the Croatian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina is legitimate, but highlighted that it is a complex constitutional and legal issue requiring caution. Although all other matters are in progress, he stressed that it is important to maintain stability and avoid additional tensions that could jeopardise the process of forming the government following the upcoming elections.
