The site where more than 8,000 tonnes of illegally dumped non-hazardous waste is located has begun its remediation. The Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency has appointed the selected contractor, marking the start of waste removal and its proper disposal.

The waste consists primarily of plastic and plastic packaging. The remediation is valued at €2.4 million, with the expectation that all waste will be removed from the site within ten months.

The Fund’s Director, Luka Balen, his deputy Mirko Budiša, and the Mayor of Samobor, Petra Škrobot, visited the site. This is one of six locations whose remediation has been prioritised by the Croatian Government within the Waste Management Plan. The Government has entrusted the Fund with securing the funds and overseeing the implementation, while the Minister of Environment and Green Transition, Marija Vučković, has issued the decision on the remediation of this site.

The Fund has initiated activities ranging from the development of remediation plans to the procurement process and the selection of the contractor. The waste removal will take place progressively, according to a pre-established schedule. Each quantity removed will be recorded and monitored with appropriate documentation, while air quality at the site will be monitored. The contractor is required to implement all prescribed safety measures.

Following the removal of all waste quantities, a final cleaning of the area is planned. The city of Samobor will also contribute financially to the project. The remediation in Samoborski Vrh is part of a broader national approach to addressing the issue of illegally dumped waste.
