A search is under way in the Triglav area for a 19-year-old Serbian national who set out towards Slovenia’s highest peak on Saturday. The operation is led by the Bovec Police Station, with mountain rescuers from Bovec and Mojstrana participating in the action.

The Slovenian police received the missing person report on Sunday, 1 November, shortly before 20:00. The Nova Gorica Regional Information Centre then informed the police that the foreign climber had become stuck on the route to Triglav via Plemenica. Mountain rescuers from Bovec and Mojstrana were immediately mobilised for the rescue operation.

A helicopter rescue was not possible at that time due to poor weather conditions, specifically strong winds and dense cloud cover. The Nova Gorica Police Directorate stated that helicopters could not be used due to the strong winds and cloud cover.

During the ground search, rescuers found several personal items belonging to the missing person. The first items were spotted at an altitude of 2,130 metres, and several of the young man’s belongings were found in the same area. In this morning’s search of the terrain, rescuers also noticed traces in the snow. The tracks led downwards to an altitude of approximately 1,900 metres, where strong winds had completely erased them.

The young man had set out on a very demanding climbing route via Plemenica. The Plemenica route, also known as the Bamberg Route, is one of the most demanding marked hiking trails on Triglav. It passes through steep, exposed sections of the mountain, and snow, ice and strong winds further increase the danger.

Rescue teams continue to search the demanding high-altitude terrain under the leadership of the Bovec Police Station. There is so far no information about what happened to the young man or where he is located.
