Australian comedian and actress Judith Lucy has announced that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. In a video posted on Instagram on Tuesday afternoon, the 58-year-old Lucy said she had 'small, not very pleasant news' to share.
Lucy said she had received an email from BreastScreen Australia informing her that the results of her mammogram were 'a bit unusual'. 'To cut a long story short, I have breast cancer,' she said. Last week, she said, she had a lumpectomy, and the doctor she called Doctor Fun had discovered more cancer. According to her, the cancer is in the early stages and 'relatively non-aggressive', and was found in one breast.
Lucy announced that she would soon undergo a double mastectomy to remove both breasts. The operation, she said, is scheduled for next Friday. She recalled having '40 years of big, spectacular breasts', adding that she thought it was perfectly fine to be without a bra in her final phase. That final phase, she said, would be very long and healthy.
Earlier this month, Lucy published her latest book, 'Well Well Well', which discusses her lifelong interest in the wellness industry. She read an excerpt from the book's introduction, and said that her treatment might prompt a second volume. 'I will keep you all up to date with everything,' she said. 'In the meantime, I am really well. I am in shock, but I am well,' she added.
A number of colleagues responded to her post. Geraldine Hickey wrote: 'That will take the weight off your chest!', while Celia Pacquola said: 'You are the most spectacular woman with those 10/10 breasts, or without them.'
Lucy was one of the most popular Australian stand-up comedians before she announced in 2022 that she was withdrawing from the stand-up scene due to long-standing anxiety. She has written four books and hosted podcast series. She has appeared in films including 'Crackerjack' and 'Bad Eggs', and performed in a stage production of Beckett's 'Happy Days' in 2023.
