The three-year-old donkey Mago, the family's darling, has returned to Borak, a settlement below Mount Dinara, after surviving a fire that swept through the area. Mago was in a terrible state, with his whole body burned, and his hooves, muzzle, eye, lower abdomen and testicles were affected.
The fire engulfed Borak, while Mago fled from the Pešić family's home towards Baučić, immediately below Fortica. He was found the following day by the Baučić, and was barely recognised. Ivo Pešić first secured his wife Milica and children Kristian, Karlo, Nora and Jur in a safe place, before setting off in search of Mago.
Mago was brought from Krkovića, in the hinterland of Skradin, three years ago, when he was barely three months old. Since then, he has become the family's pet. His internal organs and respiratory tract were not damaged in the fire, which eased the struggle for his life.
The vet Ljuba Erceg saw off Mago from Sinj after a five-week treatment. A month was spent in the battle for Mago's life. The vet placed Mago on strong antibiotics and visited him twice a day. After ten days, Mago began to bite himself as his skin itched, so the wounds reopened. The crown of Mago's hoof was damaged.
Ljuba's 'Vetti Group' will cover all of Mago's treatment costs, while Nediljko Galic has provided Mago with free accommodation and food. Nora feeds Mago, while Jura would ride Mago, but his father stops him as Mago's wounds have not yet healed. Mago's wounds are still visible and Mago is not yet fully healed. The Pešić family have survived the fire and defended their home.
