The deputy mayor of Omiš, Ivan Pivčević, spent the night in an extremely difficult situation in the town of Omiš, where the fire caused significant material damage and disrupted the safety of the local population. Overnight, the fire entered buildings and jumped from one area to another, requiring urgent evacuation measures and the organisation of accommodation for residents at risk.
Pivčević spoke on the phone around 4am as he returned from Makarska, where he had previously visited evacuated residents and tourists. People from the Medić, Mišić, and surrounding villages were forced to flee towards Maksa, where accommodation was provided for the evacuees, with 35 people accommodated in the local primary school.
The situation in Omiš was critical, with the town hall and the second hall both full. To ensure sufficient space, the middle school hall was also opened. Evacuees were brought to a safe place to protect them from the spread of the fire, which was extremely dangerous and unpredictable in that part of the day.
The consequences of the fire were devastating. A large number of cars and numerous houses were destroyed, indicating significant material damage. In addition to property losses, injuries were recorded among the local population. Some residents suffered burns, primarily on their hands, while others suffered the effects of exposure to smoke and combustion products.
Medical assistance was also provided to the firefighters who were battling the fire. One firefighter suffered an ear injury, which confirms the dangers faced by the teams on the ground. A total of several people were injured, with their condition monitored in medical facilities.
