Hajduk secured a 2-1 victory over Ajax at home in a match that marked the start of the Europa League campaign. The visitors, the four-time European champions, made the victory all the more significant.
Dennis Hadžikadunić, the Bosnian defender, started the match for Hajduk, replacing Roni Razi. Hadžikadunić delivered a high-level performance, but in the seventh minute, he made a significant error when an opponent broke free and advanced towards the goal of Hajduk’s goalkeeper, Toni Šilić. He managed to correct his mistake with a determined sprint, blocking the shot.
With the score at 0-0, Robson, the Nigerian, was left unmarked by Hadžikadunić. Hajduk’s coach, Gonzalo Garcia, had tactically prepared the team, which proved crucial in the match against such a demanding opponent.
Following the victory, Hadžikadunić posted a message on Instagram. "After many years, European football has returned to our stadium, Poljud. A huge thank you to the Torcida for their incredible support, the team gave it their all on the pitch. We are ready for what comes next, in the league and in Europe," he wrote. The message was posted ahead of the league match against Varaždin, scheduled for Sunday at Poljud.
However, there are concerns about potential sanctions due to the behaviour of some fans.
