Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel is in a stable condition in intensive care after suffering a serious injury during a Spanish second division match on Monday, the club announced.
The 30-year-old De Miguel sustained injuries to his head and chest in stoppage time during Tenerife’s home game against Andorra, following a collision with the visiting goalkeeper. The match was level at 2-2, and the incident occurred in the seventh minute of added time.
The Andorra goalkeeper ran towards the centre of the pitch to clear a long ball, during which his knee appeared to collide with De Miguel. The striker lay motionless on the pitch while medical staff attended to him, before being taken from the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium to hospital by ambulance.
Spanish media, including Marca, reported that De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics on the way to the hospital. Tenerife stated in a statement that De Miguel, who was born in Madrid, was admitted to the University Hospital Nuestra Senora de Candelaria and is "stable despite the severity of his condition".
Players from both teams were visibly shaken by the incident, and several of De Miguel’s teammates were seen crying on the pitch. The referee showed the Andorra goalkeeper a straight red card before halting the match.
Andorra issued a statement saying: "We want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesus de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today's match. We hope he recovers soon. A strong hug to the player, his family and Tenerife."
