Novak Đoković has openly stood with students protesting against the government of Aleksandar Vučić for months, and that support has placed him in the crosshairs of ruling structures. In the meantime, his family has moved from Belgrade to Athens.
Following the electoral defeat of Vučić's government, Đoković has faced criticism from some of those who had called for political change. They fault him for not engaging strongly enough in the fight against the regime.
These criticisms were discussed on a show on Informer television, where the former President of Serbia (bivši predsjednik Srbije) was a guest. Host Dragan Vučićević pointed out that even Đoković is being attacked because, in the view of his critics, he did not provide strong enough support to the students. Vučić added: "Novak Đoković supported them, he supported them from the start, he was very passionate in that support and that is his business." Upon the observation that students and blockaders are attacking Đoković, the former president added mockingly: "He did not raise both hands, but one."
Journalists at the Masters in Paris asked Đoković about the political upheavals in his homeland. Đoković said: "I have always represented my people, not the Government. The difference is great."
In response to a remark that people in leading positions in Serbia in recent years had treated him unfairly, Đoković replied: "I will not speak about the past nor comment on it. The past is past and I hope this is a new beginning for our country. I am happy about these changes and I hope that our country will do well in the future and that it will progress."
