Apple has released iOS 17.0.1, a minor system update that addresses issues identified on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. The primary fix concerns Face ID, and the new version should resolve issues reported by users.
Some users reported that their phones would suddenly freeze and then restart when attempting to unlock the device using face recognition or authenticate their identity. In addition to the unexpected restarts associated with Face ID, the update is expected to resolve several other issues reported by users.
Among these is an issue with the variable aperture on iPhone 18 Pro models. In certain shooting conditions, unusual artifacts could appear on images, a problem that could be triggered by a combination of 2x zoom, specific lighting conditions, and an aperture of f/1.48. Users also reported an error affecting multiple iPhone models running iOS 17: the touch screen would occasionally stop responding when users attempted to open the Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously.
The update is available in the iPhone settings. Users need to open Settings > General > Software Update, and then select to download and install the available version. The download is free, but users should check that the battery is sufficiently charged or connect the phone to a charger before installing. iOS 17.0.1 is available for iPhone devices compatible with iOS 17, not just Pro models. It is recommended to download the latest version of iOS, as it may contain security improvements in addition to bug fixes.
Apple has also released updates for older devices: iOS 16.7.1, iPadOS 16.7.1, macOS Tahoe 16.7.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1. Users of these devices are also advised to check for available updates in their settings and install them when prompted.
