Developers behind the Grand Theft Auto 6 title, Robust Rockstar, have made a key decision regarding the game's mechanics. Players will be able to change characters, but only in specific, strictly defined moments. The main reason for such a restriction is the desire to preserve the integrity of the story, given that individual sequences are too difficult to alter without compromising the integrity of the experience.
Rob Nelson, head of the Rockstar North studio, commented directly on this decision. According to him, in certain key missions, character changes are disabled to ensure a correct and authentic gameplay experience. The aim is to maintain narrative strength and prevent the manipulation of characters from breaking the tension or meaning of specific moments in the story.
On the other hand, the game offers freedom in other segments. In some missions, which are likely not central to the development of the main plot, players have the right to choose whether to proceed as one character or call upon another and participate as a pair. This flexibility allows players to tailor the experience to their preferences, despite stricter rules in key moments of the plot.
