The United States launched strikes on Iran on Saturday evening, to which Tehran responded by declaring the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil exports. The strikes, according to available information, began at 19:15 local time.
The escalation followed an incident involving the container ship M/V GFS Galaxy, flying the Cypriot flag, to which Iran fired a warning shot. The vessel sustained significant damage to its engine room, and one civilian crew member is listed as missing.
In response, Iran destroyed a command centre and drone hangar in Jordan, while also targeting Gulf states. The United Arab Emirates activated its air defence systems, Qatar intercepted a rocket attack, and sirens were sounded in Bahrain.
US President Donald Trump declared the end of the ceasefire that had been in place since 28 February, while Washington revoked permits for Iranian oil. Tehran has stated that the strait will remain closed until 'the end of US interference'.
The impact is already being felt in the markets, with energy prices rising, including petrol in the US.
