The US Central Command (Centcom) stated on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz is open and navigation is functioning, despite earlier Iranian assertions of closure, N1 reported. Approximately 20 per cent of global trade passes through the strait.
"The Strait of Hormuz is open to all vessels wishing to pass through this international waterway," Centcom stated on the X platform. "Iran does not control the strait. Navigation is functioning," the command added.
The statement noted that US forces are deployed and ready to ensure freedom of navigation, despite what it described as unjustified Iranian aggression, harassment, and threats.
US President Donald Trump stated briefly on Sunday: 'As far as we are concerned, it is open.' He asserted that the United States had recently reached an agreement with Iran, which had been quickly violated.
'We had an agreement with them yesterday. They were backing down in everything, but then suddenly, two hours later, they struck a ship with a drone. We responded last night with a powerful strike,' Trump said.
Iran had previously announced the closure of the strait 'until further notice' following renewed hostilities with the United States. 'No ship will be allowed to pass until the end of US operations in the region,' the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared.
