Serbia is counting down the final days before the parliamentary elections, which take place on Sunday, 25 October. Pre-election polls indicate an uncertain race, while concerns persist regarding potential irregularities and tensions on election day itself.
Students in Serbia have led mass protests against corruption and demanded government accountability for nearly two years. The protests began following the tragedy of 1 November 2024, when a concrete canopy collapsed at the railway station in Novi Sad, killing 16 people. Since then, students have organised commemorative gatherings, faculty blockades and protest marches, demanding the publication of documentation on the station's reconstruction and the establishment of responsibility for the citizens' deaths.
Students are participating in the elections with their own electoral list. During the campaign, they visited towns and villages, spoke with citizens and urged them to go to the polls. Their main goal is to establish more accountable institutions and fight corruption.
The political scene is also marked by the resignation of Aleksandar Vučić from the presidency, which he submitted at the end of September. Vučić is seeking to continue his political career as prime minister.
Attention was also drawn to a video in which students sang "Gangu i reru" by performers Vojko V and Pekija, which sparked numerous reactions on TikTok. Messages of support for the students are coming from neighbouring countries, including Croatia.
