Leaders of the Yolngu people from north-east Arnhem Land in northern Australia have officially announced the establishment of a new Dilak Land Council. This move marks a significant step in the process of returning land rights to traditional owners, emphasising that these rights have finally "come home". The announcement was made on the national stage during the Garma festival, an event that brings together representatives from various communities and institutions.
Respected elder Djawa Yunupingu addressed the gathering at the festival, which included leaders, politicians and visitors from across the country. During his speech, Yunupingu stressed the key message that real power must be fully transferred into the hands of the land owners. The new Dilak Land Council is defined as an institution that will represent the strength for the future of the Yolngu community.
Alongside the announcement of the new council, demands were made regarding the work of the ICAC, the body responsible for oversight of the process. It was emphasised that the ICAC should be enabled to conduct its proceedings without political interference. It was also requested that the body be allowed to complete its mandate, free from political commentary and pressure.
These statements come in the context of a review that was included in the 2022 election platform. That review highlighted the need for every division or organisation to ensure its constitution is adapted to current needs and purpose. Additionally, it was stressed that membership in every division must be ready and able to participate in elections.
